Sorting your accounts is one of those jobs you tend to put off and off – and off – until the very last minute.

Each new tax year you start with the best intentions to stay on top of things and make this year the one when you finally get your accounts in order.

But then business gets in the way.

Meetings – or zoom calls these days – and infinite minor crises present themselves throughout the day and they all demand to be dealt with there and then.

You should be running your business and dealing with the things you’re supposed to be dealing with.

But in the meantime, there are still your accounts.

Inevitably, they’re always the first thing to be put on the back burner. It’s not quite time yet, you figure, and so they sit there forever waiting their turn.

Problem is, the longer you leave your accounts to be dealt with, the more complicated they become.

It quickly becomes harder to keep a record of income and expenditure, invoices and receipts pile up, and month by month things get even harder to reconcile.

What should have been an annoying but relatively quick job becomes an annoying, frustrating and utterly time-consuming nightmare.

Unless you happen to be a qualified mechanic, chances are, if your car broke down, you wouldn’t try to fix your own engine.

Yet so many people who aren’t qualified accountants are expected to fix their own accounts.

We don’t think that’s very fair.

We’ve spent decades studying accountancy so we’re able to help people with their accounts and because of regular changes to the rules, we’re still always learning ourselves.

For someone who’s busy running a business, doing the accounts is hard. That’s a fact.

So, it’s important to remember there is no shame in hitting a wall with your accounts or putting them off because they’re a drain on your time.

It’s OK to ask for help. In fact, it’s advisable to get an accountant in to sort things out for you.

Yet so many people don’t. They feel they must subject themselves to the torture. Or that it might cost too much to have someone do it for them.

But rather than putting off your accounts thinking you’ll sort them another day, it is actually much more cost effective and time efficient to get someone in to sort them for you.
